Back in December of 2011, we reported that there was a rumor that a 3rd film for the Gremlin franchise was in the works. A 3rd film had actually been planned to follow Gremlins 2: The New Batch, but the film never panned out. Even the film’s main stars, Zach Gallighan and Phoebe Cates, were slated to return. Now word is starting to spread out today that Warner Bros. has other plans for the Gremlins property.

Vulture broke the news today that a close source says that Warner Brothers is planning a full reboot of the classic 80s Sci-Fi franchise. Apparently the idea has been in the works over the years, but was never able to come to fruition because of the financial burden and the fact that Steven Spielberg’s involvement may be listed as a requirement in the deal.

Spielberg was the franchise’s original producer and Joe Dante was the director for the two film. Dante has expressed on numerous occasions prior to this news that he wanted nothing to do with the rumored 3rd film because of his falling out with the studio. I don’t believe there is any reason to expect he’d be interested in helping reboot the franchise he created.

As much as I am terrified at the thought of Hollywood messing with one of my most precious childhood memories, the one thing this project has going for it is Steve Spielberg. This is still a long way out from happening so calm your nerd rage and watch the classic trailer from the original Gremlins below.
